Can I get a Kentucky medical marijuana card?

Want to get your Kentucky medical marijuana card, but not sure where to start? You’re on the right track because you’ve successfully found Kentucky Cannabis Clinic! We take the stress out of this tricky process. Our goal is to make getting you legal as quick and easy as possible. But, before we go any further, we must first determine if you meet the age, residency and medical requirements to get approved.

It is also important to note that the state of Kentucky does not issue a formal card. In 2025, the state will issue each qualifying patient a medical marijuana card. But in the meantime, patients are instructed to keep a certificate issued by the doctor with them. This functions in a very similar way to a traditional medical marijuana card. This physician certificate will allow you to possess up to eight ounces of marijuana in Kentucky, so long as it was lawfully purchased outside the state.

Age

There is technically no age requirement to get your certification or Kentucky medical marijuana card. However, if the patient is a nonemancipated youth under the age of eighteen (18), the parent or legal guardian must provide written consent at time of appointment. Our practice does not certify minors at this time.

Residency

You must primarily live in the state of Kentucky in order to get your Kentucky medical marijuana card or certification. You must have a government-issued ID, like a passport or driver’s license. However, the ID does not need to be Kentucky-related. For example, you could use a driver’s license issued by Illinois or Missouri.

Medical Condition

You must have at least one qualifying medical condition in order to get a Kentucky medical marijuana card or certification. Governor Beshear’s executive order lists many qualifying conditions. They are as follows:

  • ALS

  • cancer

  • epilepsy

  • intractable seizures

  • Parkinson's disease

  • Crohn's disease

  • multiple sclerosis

  • sickle cell anemia

  • severe and chronic pain, including fibromyalgia or arthritis

  • PTSD

  • cachexia or wasting syndrome

  • neuropathies

  • hepatitis C

  • Huntington's disease

  • HIV or AIDS

  • glaucoma

  • muscular dystrophy

  • terminal illness

You meet the requirements…but now what?

If you are a Kentucky resident with a government-issued ID and history of at least one qualifying medical condition, then you are ready to proceed! You must speak with a licensed Kentucky marijuana doctor who will certify you for cannabis use. This evaluation is done via telehealth, so you will need a phone or computer that has a camera and microphone. Most smart phones fit this bill.

The video chat typically lasts between 5-15 minutes, and on the call you’ll discuss your medical history as well as experience with medical marijuana with the physician. As the evaluation concludes, the doctor will let you know they are approving you for your Kentucky medical marijuana card.

Receive your physician approval

After the appointment, your medical marijuana certificate will be emailed to you. The state of Kentucky does not technically issue a physical medical marijuana card, but the certifictae of approval from the doctor acts in a similar way. This physician approval will allow you to possess up to eight ounces of marijuana in Kentucky, so long as it was lawfully purchased outside the state.

Don’t wait - set up your appointment today and get your Kentucky medical marijuana certification!
