Can Medical Marijuana Treat Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis has always been one of those ailments that have been incredibly hard to treat. There are no known cures, although there are treatment options that can be considered. More than 1 million people in the United States are said to suffer from this disease. Those people fall into a broad age range, with the highest numbers being from age 20-50.

With multiple sclerosis, your immune system attacks your nerves, leading to nerve damage that can cause issues with your brain, your body, and your nerve endings. Because of the disruption and communication issues from the brain to the body, people suffer from things like fatigue, chronic pain, vision loss, coordination challenges, and more.

Over time, the side effects of multiple sclerosis can affect people in different ways. Some will notice chronic symptoms that increase over time, while others may experience very limited symptoms with flare ups.

The medical industry uses treatments like physical therapy or medication to suppress the immune system. This helps to reduce symptoms and occasionally slow down the disease too. But marijuana could be a feasible treatment for the disease as well.

Marijuana Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis

Joints are a popular way to smoke marijuana. You could also use a pipe or bong.

Marijuana and the treatment of MS have just started being researched and studied more in depth. Most studies are still new and the results are limited at this point. However, there are results out there and they show positive relation between MS and marijuana treatment.

Some of the studies have shown that smoking marijuana can help to relieve certain symptoms associated with multiple sclerosis. In these studies, the relief came specifically from marijuana that contained both CBD and low levels of THC in the substance. Relief was found from muscle spasms and pain with this type of treatment. Marijuana could also help a person find relief to get sleep through the night.

In 2025, smoking marijuana will be banned in Kentucky. But, patients can get a similar effect by using a dry-herb vaporizer.

How to Treat Multiple Sclerosis with Marijuana

According to the results of the studies that have been completed so far, the best way to treat MS was through smoking marijuana. However, gummies, oils, tinctures, and lotions could also be used if they contain both CBD and THC in them. A person being treated for MS does not need high doses of THC, but there must be some present for the beneficial effects.
